It Begins

It all begins with an idea.

So It begins. I’ve been a long time fan of the roguelite/like genre. and if you go digging deep enough into the darker parts of the web to feed the addiction that is “Roguelike” you eventually start coming across more arcane names like Dwarf Fortress, Caves of Qud, and Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead. I love these games deeply and highly recommend them to any who share my enjoyment. But while looking on Reddit in a CDDA thread and seeing many complaints about new features in the game one person said “if you don’t like it go make your own” and i thought to myself “ONE DAY, I’ll meet my destiny and become a REAL GAME DEVELOPER”, a few lines later there was another post “I’m a developer, I keep asking for features, and i keep not writing any code”, this cut me. because I also am a developer, and I also would like to see things in that game, and I also am not writing code. and that was the straw that broke the camels back. I love CDDA, and it will always have a special place in my heart, but as any long term fans of the game know, the engine has some core problems. multiplayer will never be an option for CDDA, along with other game features. So, that’s what I’m doing. I’m building the CDDA that I want.

So in the interest of goal setting. core mechanics: looting, multiplayer, crafting items, constructing buildings, and constructing vehicles. farming, NPC’s to join the player, as well as hand out quests. hordes and hordes of enemies, a world that grows in spite of you.

Currently I’m in the middle of registering my domain and such, and the game is… well it’s bare bones, i have a couple sprites just for getting something on the screen. and i think next steps are to build out the multiplayer. the plan is to distribute the multiplayer servers so consumers can host their own worlds. I’m writing this in godot with gdscript, (if you’re gonna buy into an ecosystem you may as well buy into all of it). I am currently a full time employee elsewhere, and somewhat in the tail end of a reno on my house. but I have a couple friends who said they would be interesting in tagging along for this venture, I guess we’ll see how this goes. Oh, and don’t mind the stock image provided by square space, I just wanted something simple to manage for the website…
